Who we are and what this covers

Earthist (“we”, “us”, “our”) operates the Earthist mobile application and the website at earthist.com.au (together, the “Platform”). We are committed to protecting your personal information and complying with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). This policy explains what we collect, why, how we use and disclose it, and your rights.

What we collect

Depending on whether you are a business or a creator, we may collect:

  • Identity and contact details: name, email address, business name, username and handle, profile photo.
  • Verification details: Australian Business Number (ABN) and business verification documents.
  • Location information: your suburb and approximate location, used to match businesses with nearby creators and display map results.
  • Content you provide: briefs, bids, messages, reviews, portfolio images and video.
  • Instagram data: only if you choose to connect Instagram, we receive your handle and recent media to populate your portfolio. You can disconnect at any time.
  • Device and usage data: device push token, app interactions, and technical logs used to operate and improve the Platform.
  • Payment information: once online payments launch, processed by Stripe. We never store full card numbers. During the launch beta, Earthist does not process payments.

How we use it

Your information is used to:

  • Create and manage your account and verify your identity or business.
  • Operate the marketplace: matching, briefs, bids, bookings, messaging and reviews.
  • Process payments, hold funds in escrow, and pay out creators, once online payments launch.
  • Send transactional communications, such as booking confirmations, and push notifications you have enabled.
  • Provide support, prevent fraud and abuse, enforce our Terms, and keep the community safe.
  • Comply with our legal obligations, including tax and record keeping.

We do not sell your data.

Who we disclose it to

We disclose personal information to service providers who help us run the Platform, including:

  • Supabase: database, authentication and file storage.
  • Stripe: payments, escrow and creator payouts, once online payments launch.
  • Mapbox: map rendering and geocoding.
  • Resend: transactional email delivery.
  • Expo and Apple: push notification delivery.
  • Anthropic: automated content safety review of uploaded media.
  • Sentry: crash and error diagnostics.
  • Meta and Instagram: only if you connect your Instagram account.

We also disclose limited profile information to other users where necessary for the marketplace to function. For example, a creator’s public profile is visible to businesses. We may disclose information where required by law or to protect our rights and the safety of users.

Overseas disclosure

Some of our service providers store or process data outside Australia, including in the United States and the European Union. Where we disclose personal information overseas, we take reasonable steps to ensure it is handled consistently with the APPs.

Storage and security

We take reasonable steps to protect your personal information from misuse, interference, loss, and unauthorised access, modification or disclosure, including encryption in transit, access controls and row level security on our database. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure.

Access, correction, retention and deletion

You can access and update most of your information directly in the app. You may also request access to, or correction of, your personal information by contacting us. We will respond within a reasonable period.

We retain personal information for as long as needed to provide the Platform and to meet our legal, tax and record keeping obligations. You can delete your account directly in the app (Me, then Delete account) or by contacting us; some information may be retained where the law requires.

Cookies and children

Our website uses minimal cookies and similar technologies necessary for the site to function. We do not use the website for behavioural advertising.

The Platform is intended for users aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18.

Complaints and contact

If you have a privacy complaint, contact us and we will respond within a reasonable period. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).
